Crafting with Pipe Cleaners: Sea Animals Part 2

Crafting with Pipe Cleaners: Sea Animals Part 2

With pipe cleaners, you can make the most wonderful sea animals. In this part, you’ll discover how to create a crab and an octopus. Gather your materials and dive into your own creative underwater world!

1
Start by choosing a set of pipe cleaners in different colours. For each animal, pick the colours you want to use.
2
For the crab, use 8 orange pipe cleaners.
3
Take one pipe cleaner and cut it into 4 equal pieces.
4
Place the four short pieces neatly on top of each other and lay a whole pipe cleaner across them.
5
Take 3 or 4 pipe cleaners and wrap them tightly around the middle of the bundle. This will form the body of the crab.
6
Cut another pipe cleaner in half.
7
Place one half on top of the body and wrap one or two more pipe cleaners around it to secure everything.
8
Roll the two ends of the half pipe cleaner inward into spirals. These will become the eye stalks.
9
Take the two long pipe cleaners that are still sticking out, bend each into a loop, and twist them firmly at the body.
10
Fold the loops inward to shape the crab’s claws.
11
Bend the short ends outward to create legs. Finally, glue two wiggly eyes onto the spiral eye stalks – and your crab is finished!
12
For the octopus, you’ll need 8 dark blue and 4 light blue pipe cleaners.
13
Start with 4 dark blue pipe cleaners. Roll the first one into a ball. Insert the next pipe cleaner into it and wrap around. Continue until all four have been used. Shape it into a slightly oval body.
14
Take the other 4 dark blue pipe cleaners. Fold each one in half over the body and twist the ends firmly underneath.
15
Shape the body a little more with your fingers and spread the eight ends evenly around.
16
Take the light blue pipe cleaners and wrap them around the body in the same way. Twist them firmly underneath.
17
Make sure the light blue pipe cleaners are spread out so the dark and light colours alternate nicely.
18
Now take each light and dark pipe cleaner pair and twist them together to form 8 strong legs.
19
Trim the ends so all legs are roughly the same length.
20
Wrap each leg once around a pen or pencil. Remove the pen, and you’ll have lovely curly tentacles.
21
Spread the legs out nicely and, to finish, glue two wiggly eyes onto the body. Your octopus is now complete!
