Hoe werkt houtbranden?

Houtbranden, wat we ook kennen als pyrografie, bestaat uit een techniek waarbij hitte wordt gebruikt om de oppervlakte van houten voorwerpen lichtjes te verbranden. Hierdoor ontstaat een zwarte kleur (de kleur van verbrand hout) en kun je tekst of illustraties op hout afbeelden.

Het proces en de werking zijn net zo eenvoudig als dat het klinkt. Om in detail te treden:

Een houtbrander bestaat uit een handvat (dat niet warm wordt) en een brandpunt. De meeste houtbranders werken op elektriciteit en zetten deze energie om in hitte.

Wanneer de verwarmde metalen punt in contact komt met hout, worden cellulose en lignine in het hout afgebroken. Dit zijn stoffen in hout die zorgen voor structuur en sterkte. Wanneer de stoffen worden afgebroken ontstaat een donkere tint.
