Looking for a fun paper craft idea? In this project, you will learn how to fold an origami surprise box from paper. When the box opens, a hidden message appears on the inside. A creative paper craft that is perfect for birthdays or a personal surprise.
For this project you will need a square sheet of paper. For this DIY we use paper measuring 8.2 x 8.2 inches (21 × 21 cm).

Fold the paper diagonally in half and then unfold it again. You can use a bone folder to create neat, crisp folds.

Fold the paper diagonally in half in the opposite direction and unfold it again.

Fold the paper horizontally in half and then unfold it again.

Turn the paper a quarter turn and fold it horizontally in half once more. Then unfold the paper again.

Place the paper so it lies in a diamond shape in front of you. Fold the bottom point to the centre of the paper.

Then fold the top point to the centre.

Fold the bottom point to the centre once more.

Repeat this with the top point as well.

Turn the paper so the points are facing up and down. Fold the top right corner diagonally towards the centre, so the edge lines up with the vertical centre crease.

Repeat this step with the top left corner, so both sides are folded towards the centre.

Now fold the top point downwards, over the two folded flaps.

Fold the right point inwards, creating a small triangle at the top.

Repeat this with the left point.

Fold the top point upwards again.

Then fold this point straight upwards along the existing crease and open it again. This creates a guideline for the next step.

Fold the right corner diagonally towards the centre.

Repeat this with the left corner.

Fold the entire point upwards.

Turn the paper over and repeat steps 10 to 19 on the other side.

Carefully open the folded piece to create a box shape.

Cut a square piece of paper measuring 2.9 x 2.9 inches (7.5 × 7.5 cm) and decorate it with a message, drawing, or small photo.

Place this square inside the box. When the box is opened, the hidden message will appear.
