DIY giftbag: Backpack

DIY giftbag: Backpack

With this step-by-step tutorial, you create your own mini backpack-style giftbag out of paper – perfect for wrapping a small present or treat! Decorate your paper backpack with your favourite patterned paper.

1
Take a sheet of cardstock in the colour ‘Anemone’ and trim it to 11.8 x 9.8 inches (30 x 25 cm).
2
Place the sheet on your scoring board with the long side (11.8 inches/30 cm) at the top. Score at 4.3 inches and 7.5 inches (11 cm and 19 cm).
3
Rotate the paper 90 degrees. Score the full length at 4.3 inches (11 cm) and 5.5 inches (14 cm). Then score at 3.5 inches (9 cm) and 6.3 inches (16 cm), but only down to the first horizontal line. Skip the centre and continue scoring from the second horizontal line.
4
Cut the paper as shown in the photo, up to the inner score line, so that three horizontal panels remain.
5
Trim small corners off the flaps (see photo).
6
Use a bone folder to fold all score lines neatly and sharply.
7
Apply double-sided tape along the edges of the straight sections (see example photo).
8
Fold the piece into a box shape and adhere the flaps on the inside.
9
Now choose two fun papers from the “Over the Rainbow” paper pad by Marianne Design. In this example, a rainbow pattern and a heart pattern were used.
10
Cut two rectangles from the rainbow paper, measuring 3 x 4.1 inches (7.5 x 10.5 cm).
11
Use double-sided tape to attach these to the front and back of the box.
12
Cut a rectangle from the heart-patterned paper, measuring 3.3 x 4.3 inches (8.5 x 11 cm).
13
Place the 4.3 inches (11 cm) side at the top of your scoring board and score at 1.1 inches (3 cm) and 2.5 inches (6.5 cm). Fold along the score lines.
14
Round the corners using a corner & notch punch.
15
Attach the 1.1 inches (3 cm) section to the back of the box, up to the score line. This will form the lid.
16
Cut two strips from the heart paper, each measuring 0.8 x 4.3 inches (2 x 11 cm).
17
With the long side at the top, score the strips at 0.4 and 4 inches (1 cm and 10 cm). Fold the small flaps.
18
Add tape to the flaps and stick them to the back of the box to create the backpack straps.
19
Choose a third sheet of paper and punch one scalloped circle (51 mm) and one regular circle (39 mm).
20
Write a cheerful message on the plain side of the small circle using a brush pen or fine liner.
21
Layer the circles on top of each other. Place a long piece of tape on the top half of the scalloped circle and a small piece on the bottom half.
22
Attach this to the lid: the long tape goes on the lid, while the small piece helps to keep the lid closed without damaging the box.
23
Your mini backpack giftbag is now ready! Fill it with something fun or tasty. Of course, you can mix and match colours and patterns however you like.
