At Vaessen Creative you’ll find attractive block printing stamps with oriental motifs. Block printing is one of the oldest forms of printmaking and is done on various different materials, such as wood, fabric, paper and canvas. The images produced using this technique are usually much thicker in structure compared with other forms of printmaking. Because the wooden block-printing stamps are cut by hand, they are less detailed and the prints show more texture. Block printing as a technique is known as ‘relief printing’, because the ink produces a raised texture on the paper.
Everyone is familiar with wooden stamps made of a small wooden block with a rubber picture. These wooden stamps have been around for at least 100 years. At Vaessen Creative you’ll find various wooden alphabet stamps, with or without numbers. Wooden stamps are sturdy, easy to use, and they produce attractive prints. Unfortunately, they’re relatively expensive due to their high cost price and it’s hard to see exactly what you’re doing on the paper. For these reasons, clear stamps and rubber stamps are more popular.
In recent years, clear stamps have become very popular and Vaessen Creative offers a wide range. Clear stamps are supplied between two plastic sheets, with one large or a number of smaller silicone stamps on one theme. To use these you’ll need a stamp block (acrylic or clear block). A stamp block is clear plastic block to which you stick the transparent stamps in order to use them. So it’s a kind of holder or handgrip. Because clear stamps are transparent, you can see clearly where you’re stamping and you can do it very precisely. What’s more, they’re made of flexible material and you don’t have to press so hard to obtain a good print. Some clear stamps don’t print well the first time, because they have a protective layer. You can solve this problem by carefully rubbing over the stamp with a white eraser.
After use, clean the clear stamp and then stick it back onto the plastic sheet. One advantage is that these stamps take up less space than wooden stamps. You can even keep them in ring binders. Take care not to use solvent-based inks on the clear stamps, as these types of ink can dissolve the stamps. Stazon ink is an example of a solvent-based ink. For this reason, use the Stazon all-purpose stamp cleaner and not the Stazon cleaner for cleaning clear stamps.
Rubber stamps – or cling stamps – are a kind of mixture of wooden stamps and clear stamps. They’re rubber stamps without a wooden block and you mount them in the same way as clear stamps. Rubber stamps are made of rigid material with a foam layer, so that you can mount them directly onto a stamp block. This means that, as with the clear stamps, you also need a stamp block for rubber stamps. With rubber stamps, you don’t have such a clear view of where you’re stamping as with clear stamps. You'll sometimes need to apply some extra pressure when using them, but they do produce perfect stamps straight away. Like clear stamps, rubber stamps take up less space than wooden stamps.
After use, clean the rubber stamp with special stamp cleaner. If a stamp no longer sticks properly to a stamp block, this is usually because there’s some dirt on it. In that case, thoroughly clean the foam layer and your stamp block. Store your rubber stamps carefully. If rubber stamps are exposed to light and extreme temperatures, they become brittle. Sunlight dries out the rubber, causing cracks, and the stamp no longer absorbs ink properly. For this reason, store your rubber stamps in a cool, dark and dry place.
