Let’s get started with: Macramé

Let’s get started with: Macramé

Macramé might just be the craft that requires the fewest materials to create something truly expressive. Once you’ve mastered the art of tying knots and designing the right patterns, you can make almost anything!

Before we get started and guide you through the world of macramé, we’ll explain what it is, what materials you need, and what you can create.

Are you trying macramé for the first time? Don’t worry. After reading this guide, you’ll know everything you need to get started. From a beautiful bracelet to a cosy plant hanger – Vaessen Creative is here to help you.

What exactly is macramé?

Did you know that macramé is centuries old? It’s no surprise – macramé is a technique that involves tying knots to create decorative patterns. Using these patterns, you can craft a wide variety of creative projects.

In the past, people mainly used macramé to make baskets and holders for transporting goods. Today, macramé is mostly used to make beautiful creations such as bracelets, plant holders and home decorations.

The art of knotting has truly stood the test of time. Now it’s your turn to learn how to use this technique to unleash your creativity!

What do you need to make macramé knots?

A good start is half the work – and that’s certainly true for macramé. You won’t need much to get started.

Everything you need for macramé includes:

A stick or wooden ring is optional. It depends on what you want to make and how you want it to look. It’s often helpful to secure the end of the cord somewhere so you can keep it taut while knotting.

Types of macramé knots

There are countless macramé knots – which is great news, because it means you can take your creativity in any direction you like!

There are three knots to begin with. We recommend practising the following three to build the foundation for your macramé journey.

1. Lark’s Head Knot

The most commonly used knot is the lark’s head. It’s often used to attach your cord to a dowel, ring or stick:

  1. Fold the cord in half.
  2. Place the loop under the dowel.
  3. Pull the ends through the loop.
  4. Tighten the cords so the knot sits firmly against the dowel.

2. Square Knot

This decorative flat knot is perfect for adding pattern to your macramé projects. You’ll need three working cords:

  1. Bring the left cord over the middle one, forming a loop.
  2. Bring the right cord over the left cord.
  3. Pass the right cord under the middle and left cords.
  4. Pull the right cord through the loop formed on the left side.

You’ve now made half of a square knot. Repeat the steps in reverse to complete the full knot.

3. Wrapping Knot

This one is slightly more advanced and creates a neat binding effect with several cords:

  1. Make a loop with one cord and place it on top of the others.
  2. Wrap the working end around the loop from top to bottom.
  3. Pass the end through the loop that’s sticking out.
  4. Gently tighten to secure.

Once you’ve mastered these basic knots, you’re well on your way! From here, you can explore many more variations and patterns.

What Can You Make with Macramé?

Almost anything! Macramé is incredibly versatile and offers endless creative possibilities, from boho to modern styles.

The most popular macramé creations include:
