Watercolour paper was developed especially for painting, but is also suitable for drawing, sketching and other mixed media art projects. The paper has a special surface that can absorb wet media well without causing the paper to warp or buckle. Watercolour paints, pans or pencils can be applied or mixed on the paper. This absorbent paper is designed to handle different kinds of wet media. In contrast to regular paper, watercolor sheets won’t buckle or warp when dry.
The surface allows for a controlled application of colours as the paint doesn’t spread or bleed. An added bonus, when used for drawing techniques, is that it is easy to erase the papers surface should a mistake be made. Available in different sizes like A4, A5, A6 and standard scrapbook size of 12x12 inch or 30,5 x 30,5 cm. High-quality archival artist-grade watercolor paper will not deteriorate or yellow, unlike student-grade paper. Choose between a smooth or textured surface and various paper thicknesses.
The watercolour paper sheets can be used with acrylic paint, watercolour paints and pans, brush pens, markers, pencils, fine liners, crayons and ink.
Paper Weight or Thickness
The GSM, or Grams per Square Meter, of watercolor paper, indicates the paper thickness and ensures that the paper absorbs water well, giving you the perfect canvas for all kinds of watercolour artwork.
High quality, artist-grade watercolor paper is available in thicknesses between 120 and 840 gsm.
Choosing the right paper thickness depends mainly on which painting technique will be applied. For wet watercolor techniques, like a wet-in-wet watercolor painting, a higher thickness of 300 gsm or more is recommended.
Paper surfaces for watercolor painting
Watercolor paper is available with different surface textures ranging from a smooth, satin-finish to a rough, textured surface. Choosing which texture is best for your project depends on the painting technique, the design and the preference of the artist. Beginners who wish to learn to paint are recommended to experiment with different backgrounds.
Hot press watercolor paper has a fine-grained, smooth surface and is well suited for detailed work.
Thanks to the smooth surface finish the sheets are perfect to use for both wet or dry watercolour techniques, like hand lettering, brush lettering and painting.
Cold press paper has a textured, slightly rough surface suitable for almost all watercolor techniques. Wet colors are easy to control and are absorbed evenly, which is why this texture is popular with newcomers to watercolor painting. The sheets are perfect to use for both wet and dry techniques, they work well with diluted and undiluted mediums and can hold pigments fantastically.
Textured watercolor sheets can be stretched prior to use to eliminate any possibility of the paper buckling or warping out of shape.
Florence watercolor paper
